2nd Regional Living Lab Workshop in Extremadura

FUNDECYT-PCTEX moves forward in the promotion of the valorisation of the regional agricultural by-products in a new session with a participation of 27 actors of the primary sector

On the 27th of March 2025, FUNDECYT-PCTEX gathered 27 key stakeholders from the primary sector for the second regional workshop of the ROBOCOOP-EU Living Lab in Extremadura. The session took place during the 24th IBEROVINAC Wine and Olive Fair in Almendralejo (Extremadura, Spain).

Following the initial workshop—which focused on the general opportunities for valorising by-products from grape, olive, and stone fruit production—this second meeting showcased specific technologies and processes being used in the ROBOCOOP-EU project. Participants explored high-value biocomposites derived from these by-products and discussed practical pathways for regional adoption.

The session also addressed collaboration models to support the transition to circular bioeconomy practices, tailored to the realities of the Extremadura region.

In addition to regional partners and the University of Extremadura, cooperatives such as Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias Extremadura, ASEVEX (Association of Wine Companies of Extremadura), and Virgen de la Estrella were actively involved. The event also welcomed representatives from industry, research, end-users, and local government.

Prior to the working group session, ROBOCOOP-EU participated in an open exchange titled “Scientific and Technological Exchange Table for the Valorisation of Olive and Vineyard By-Products”. This forum promoted collaboration between businesses, researchers, and technology providers to address sector challenges through innovation.

During the main workshop, discussions covered:

  • Raw material sourcing and preparation
  • Key technologies and processes for by-product valorisation
  • Investment, scale, and cost considerations
  • Molecules of interest and potential markets
  • Business models to foster growth in the bio-based economy

Participants also shared feedback on the proposed business models, contributing data to inform the design of a future biorefinery in the region.
